Why I decided to pursue pharmacy school?  N.G.

What do you want to be when you grow up?  This is a question everyone has heard hundreds of times and probably answered in many different ways.  As children we dream of being astronauts, cowboys, professional athletes and actors.  As we grow older and we hold those first summer jobs at retail stores of restaurants, we realize the importance of having a passion for our chosen field.  If we are going to work 40 hours a week for 30 years, we better be certain that we will be able to wake up each day satisfied with our decision and motivated to continually develop in our professional career.  At some point in my own journey, I discovered my passion for helping others.  I wanted to pursue a career that would give me a chance to contribute to the well being of others.  When I combined my fascination with science and medicine with my passion it logically guided me to pharmacy.

There are many ways in which one person can help another.  Some professionals keep our streets safe, others educate our youth in hopes of providing them with the opportunity for a brighter future and some volunteer their time to philanthropic organizations.  I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to study in hopes of one day joining the ranks of those individuals who help others by providing them with a safe and trusting environment in which they can come to pick up their medicine.  I view pharmacy not only as providing people with necessary medication but also as providing reassurance to my customers that they are receiving nothing less than optimal medical treatment.  I hope that my attentiveness to their concerns and questions will help make their lives even the slightest bit easier.  To me helping others can be very self-fulfilling.  I will be able to witness how my professional actions have helped improve the health of my customers.  I will have the opportunity to make sick children smile again and grandparents live longer, fuller lives.  Knowing that I will play some small part in making this world a healthier place is one of my main reasons I chose to attend Pharmacy school.

Helping others is a theme that runs throughout all aspects of my life, which is another reason why a career as a Pharmacist appeals to me.  Pharmacy will provide me with not only a respected profession in the medical field but also the flexibility to be a strong presence in the lives of my family.  I will be able to make a significant contribution to the family income and will also be able to play an active part in the lives of my children.  I will be able to give them opportunities I never had as a child and will still have the time to be the kind of parent I have always hoped to be.  It will give me the means to support my children in the pursuit of their own dreams so that one day they too will face limitless possibilities when someone asks them what they would like to be when they grow up.

The Oath of the Pharmacists states, "At this time, I vow to devote my professional life to the service of all humankind through the profession of pharmacy."  After a long journey and many different answers to the opening question, I have discovered that it is this oath and this profession that encompasses my interest and, more importantly, my passion.
